Health Accountability
As a former missionary who lived overseas, a common thread I saw among women ministry workers was that they weren’t taking enough time for self-care. Specifically, women weren’t eating nutritionally, they weren’t sleeping, and they weren’t consistently exercising. As a result, they were steadily gaining weight, had multiple physical and/or mental issues, low energy, and even low self-esteem. I include myself among them. I suffered from anxiety, depression, and panic disorders due the stress I was putting on my body. After returning to the states, I discovered this wasn’t just an issue among ministry workers, but a wide-spread epidemic among women. Perhaps its due to our innate need to care for others, to put our families, our jobs, our ministries ahead of our own needs, but ladies it’s important to know it is NOT selfish to practice self-care. In fact, consistent self-care practices such as regular exercise and nutritional diets can improve our mood, clear our skin, strengthen our bodies, and give us the confidence and energy we need to lead our businesses, our families, and our ministries. We cannot pour from an empty cup.
